This story has taken me time to write because the rights words just took longer to find.

For days, she labored with incredible determination, and trust surrounded by deep support and so much love. She stayed open through every turn labor brought, meeting each moment with grace even as exhaustion settled into her bones.

And when the time came to make decisions for rest and relief, she made them thoughtfully, without losing sight of what mattered most to her. That kind of surrender takes strength, too.

I hope she always remembers this: her son entered the world carried by a mother who showed immense resilience, and love long before she ever held him in her arms. And after all the winding turns of his birth, she brought him earthside exactly the way she fought so hard to.

A low lying placenta means the placenta is less than 2cm from the cervix. It’s identified in around 10% of pregnancies, and approximately 98% will resolve before delivery as the uterus grows and stretches upward over time.

As birth approaches, we pay close attention to how far the placenta is from the cervical opening. Generally, we hope to see the placental edge at least 2 cm away from the cervix to allow space for the cervix to safely thin and dilate during labor.

A persistent low lying placenta can increase the risk of preterm birth, bleeding before birth, postpartum hemorrhage, and in some cases may make vaginal birth unsafe depending on placental location and symptoms. Because of this, follow-up ultrasounds are an important part of monitoring and birth planning.

A low lying placenta or placenta previa (when the placenta completely covers the cervix, aka baby’s exit) is considered a risk-out criteria for homebirth, meaning birth in a hospital setting is recommended for the safety of both parent and baby.

This found at the anatomy scan is not automatically the final story. Pregnancy often asks us to hold both information and patience at the same time.

Second time mom, first time homebirth

She labored at home surrounded by the steady love and support of her husband and son. As things began to shift and intensify, she knew she was ready. Into the water she went, and just moments later, a beautiful surprise baby girl was born.

The look on her face after bringing her daughter earthside said it all: pure joy, strength, and the deep knowing of “I did it”!
